"Supergirl" Special Screening With Talent Q&A: Recap
a lovely night spent laughing at Jason Mamoa's jokes
One of the greatest things about working in cinema is realising that once you are in it, this world is pretty small after all. And often the friends you make along the way end up having cool perks like this one: being invited to special screenings with actors present.
Personally, I usually get invited through my own job, but this time it was thanks to a lovely friend of mine working at Warner that last night I got to be her plus one at the “Supergirl Special Screening” in Leicester Square, London.
In case you are wondering, how can I get invited to a movie premiere? I wrote an article about it:
So... Who Gets Invited to Movie Premieres?
Before I started working in the media industry, I had only a vague understanding of what went in the behind-the-scenes of movies – both literally and spiritually. From school to documentaries, I learned that making a film is a herculean effort: thousands of people on set, hundreds of creatives, endless logistics, locations, expertise. A miracle it all comes together, really.
Strolling Down The Red Carpet
Although I can’t talk about the movie before it releases worldwide, I can tell you about this fun night surrounded by impressive cosplays left and right, swishing their red cloaks around. I deffo did not get the memo and looked like I randomly ended up there from the office - which, incidentally, I did.
Alas, I must admit I wholly misunderstood the assignment; I had not clocked that this would be a premiere, thus criminally underdelivering on my red carpet outfit choice.
For I am a strong believer that every time you are lucky enough to end up on a red carpet - or, in this case, blue - you should go all out. Wear the best, most extreme, outrageous outfits you can think of and have fun with it! On a scale from a 1 to Margot Robbie wearing a dress woven from real human hair at the Wuthering Heights premiere, be a 9 (I draw a line at human hair). Wear those outfits you never get to, that sparkly dress you bought once on a whim and never found the occasion to put it on. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. Wear that gown, put that make up on and stride with those wobbly heels in front of the paparazzi if that’s what you want.
I didn’t and miserably failed, but I had an awesome time anyway. I even got a tat:
I Could Almost Touch Jason Mamoa
I am no stranger to being in close proximity to VIPs, as thanks to my job I get to go to film premieres and see them up close - I even wrote a little guide about it:
5 Things No One Tells You Happen When You Meet A Famous Actor IRL
Sooner or later we all have dreamt of meeting a famous actor in real life. And you don’t need to be a cinema enthusiast/part time red carpet dweller/part time VIPs stalker like me to answer yes.
And this time I was real close. I sat in first row and I was so so so close I could count the rings on Jason Mamoa’s huge hands.
But be proud of me, oh dear readers, because I was totally unimpressed. Have I become… cool?! So cool that being a few feet away from Aquaman does not faze me one bit? HAS FINALLY THE COOLNESS HIT ME?! For I am historically very much uncool and totally freak out.
Case in point:
He even sat amongst us to watch the movie and I was like, cool, whatevs
Who have I become!? I don’t recognise my dorky self!!
Hearing Directly From The Cast
The Q&A was super interesting as well. We heard from Craig Gillespie what his vision for this movie and how he wanted to shed a spotlight on the fringes of society, give a gritty, criminal look to a fun family movie. And then we heard from the cast how it was and felt to work on the project. From what they said I had the feeling that this movie will be a bit deeper than last year’s Superman…
The focus was often on Supergirl’s character arc and Milly Alcock said “it manages to humanise someone far from human”, eloquently adding that “everyone is beautifully flawed and a that life is a blissful mess of wonderful contradictions”.
Mamoa was low key the proudest one of the project, his long standing desire to play Lobo publicly well-known and swiftly capitalised on by the producers, and reiterated the last cut of the movie made him laugh, cry and that it is filled with soul and humanity.
Eve Ridley playing Ruthye said that what she hopes the audience will take away from this is that “It’s ok being you, and sometimes being you is being you own hero”. She also made us all feel old as shit when she said she spent her childhood watching Shazam! over and over. A movie from 2019, so basically her childhood was yesterday.
But although Mamoa’s aura captures everyone like moths to a flame, my favourite person award for the night goes to Matthias Schoenaerts, who was clearly having the best time of his life and had the funniest comments to share.
At the question, why did you decide to accept this role? He replied: because I love playing romantic leads.
Only a few more days and a Supergirl proper review can come out!

Disclosure Day Introduces A Lot Without Disclosing Much
As possibly my favourite director, I went to see Spielberg’s Disclosure Day very much relaxed and expecting to come out as happy as a clam. I did come out happy and satisfied indeed, although with my eyes brimming with tears.
In A World Where Everybody Has A Voice, What Should You Write About?
I first joined Substack because like many of you I was attracted by the long-form and seemingly less performative nature of this platform.
London based Acquisitions TV Exec, I watch movies and I love to write. In this newsletter I tell you what going to movie premieres is like, review the movies I watch and share practical guides on storytelling & scriptwriting. If this sounds good you know what to do :)

I live my little dream job working in cinema vicariously through you, Sofi. I hope you know that! Okay so I obviously adored this article and hearing about all the crazy stuff you got up to and you never fail to make me laugh -- the hair flick picture with your outfit (which is gorg btw but could have done with some electric blue spray paint!) -- hilarious.
But what I love most about reading these types of blogs is the knowledge that it is possible to have my dream career. You make everything seem so close to reality, and so human, which the film industry often fails to do in my opinion. Everything about films always seems so out of touch. But not on the Red Carpet Chronicles!!
